Which of these are actually worth driving

Everything below is within a day's reach of Amsterdam, but they are not equally good ideas, and we would rather say so here than after you have booked.

Some of these cities have a fast direct train from Amsterdam. Where that is true — Brussels and Düsseldorf in particular — a private car is about comfort, groups and luggage rather than speed, and we say as much on those pages. Where it is not true, and Bruges is the clearest case, the difference is an hour and a half each way.

Shopping and family days

These two are in the Netherlands, not abroad, and they sit here because people group them with the European days. No border, no environmental zone, nothing extra to arrange.

Only where the two are close enough that the second one is not a separate journey.

Questions

Are European tours priced like the Dutch ones?

Same structure — per private group, per vehicle, four vehicles — but each European route is quoted individually. Bruges is the one we publish; the rest are on request until we have costed them properly.

Is there anything extra to arrange for crossing the border?

Bring your passport or ID card. Belgium's low emission zones are camera-enforced and Dutch-registered vehicles are checked automatically, so there is nothing for you to do; German environmental zones need a windscreen sticker, which is our side of it.

Which European destination do most people pick?

Bruges, by a wide margin — it is the one where the train genuinely does not compete.

Will you tell us if the train is better?

Yes, and we do it on the pages themselves. Brussels and Düsseldorf both have fast direct services from Amsterdam and for a couple going centre to centre the train wins. We would rather lose that booking than have you regret it.
