The route from Amsterdam

~266 km to Cologne, 70 km on to Aachen, about 2 hours 40 out, 2 hours 35 back. For comparison, two separate journeys with a change; not a realistic day trip.

This combination exists because of geography rather than ambition. Aachen sits between Cologne and the Dutch border, so visiting it on the way home adds about forty minutes to a day you were already driving.

Eleven hours: five in Cologne, two in Aachen. Cologne gets the cathedral, the old town and the Rhine. Aachen gets the Palatine Chapel and the old centre, which is genuinely enough for a small city.

Why take a private driver

By rail these are two separate day trips. Aachen alone is about three and a half hours each way with a change. Putting them together only makes sense with a vehicle, and only in this direction.

A sample day

This is how we would plan it. Nothing here is fixed — the point of a private day is that it bends to you.

  1. Pickup at your hotel

    Anywhere in Amsterdam.

  2. Arrive in Cologne

    Parked near the cathedral.

  3. Cologne

The cathedral, the old town lanes, the Hohenzollern bridge and the Rhine. Just under five hours including lunch.

  4. Drive to Aachen

    Seventy kilometres, about an hour.

  5. Aachen

The Palatine Chapel and the cathedral treasury, the market square and the Elisenbrunnen. Two hours, which covers the centre.

  6. Drive back

    Two hours thirty-five.

  7. Back at your hotel

    Long day, two UNESCO sites.

Questions

Is two hours enough for Aachen?

For the cathedral, the treasury and the market square, yes. It is a small centre. If you want the spa or the Three-Country Point, take Aachen on its own.

Could we do Düsseldorf instead of Aachen?

You could, but it is in the wrong direction — Düsseldorf is north of Cologne and Aachen is on your way home. Adding Düsseldorf makes the day longer for less.

Which cathedral is more impressive?

Different things. Cologne is the largest Gothic church in northern Europe and overwhelming by scale. Aachen is a thousand years older and overwhelming by age. Most people find Aachen the more surprising of the two.
