Best Time to Visit Keukenhof in 2026

The honest insider’s guide to timing your tulip trip perfectly.

By Private Holland Tours · 8 min read

If there’s one question we get more than any other, it’s this: when is the best time to visit Keukenhof? The honest answer is more nuanced than most travel blogs admit. Here’s what we tell our own guests.

The Short Answer

Mid-April is the peak. Specifically, the second and third week of April give you the highest probability of seeing the gardens at full bloom, along with the surrounding tulip fields in color. But — and this is important — bloom timing shifts every year depending on the winter, and no one can promise perfect flowers on a specific date.

Keukenhof 2026 Opening Dates

Keukenhof is only open about 8 weeks per year. In 2026, the gardens run from 20 March to 10 May. That’s it — no extensions, no exceptions. Miss this window and you’ll need to wait another full year.

Week-by-Week Breakdown

Late March (Opening Week)

Early bloomers are out — crocuses, daffodils, early tulips. The gardens are beautiful but not yet at their peak. The surrounding bulb fields are mostly still green. Good if you want fewer crowds, but you’ll miss the iconic “sea of tulips” scenery.

Early April

Bloom is ramping up fast. Most tulip varieties are starting to open. The bulb fields begin to show color strips. This is a lovely time to visit — less crowded than peak week, with plenty to see.

Mid-April (The Sweet Spot)

This is when we take most of our guests. The gardens are at their absolute best, the outdoor bulb fields are full rainbow color, and the weather is usually mild. It’s also the busiest time — which is exactly why arriving at 8am with a private driver matters.

Late April — Early May

The gardens are still beautiful, but many outdoor field tulips have been harvested (the farmers cut the heads to strengthen the bulbs). The gardens themselves remain stunning until closing day.

How to Avoid the Crowds

Keukenhof gets over 1.5 million visitors in its 8-week season. On peak Saturdays, it can feel like every one of them showed up at the same time. Here’s how we handle it:

What About the Weather?

April in the Netherlands is unpredictable. You might get sunshine. You might get rain. You might get all four seasons in one afternoon. Bring a waterproof jacket regardless of forecast, wear comfortable walking shoes, and don’t let clouds discourage you — tulips look amazing in soft, overcast light. It’s actually better for photos than harsh sun.

Our Honest Recommendation

Book a mid-April Tuesday or Wednesday. Arrive at 8am. Spend 3–4 hours inside the gardens. Follow it with an hour driving through the bulb fields with stops for photos. Back in Amsterdam by 2pm.

That’s the formula we use for our private Keukenhof tour, and it’s the difference between a stressful day and a perfect one.
